Economy Seating Categories on American Airlines

When it comes to selecting seats for your American Airlines flight, not all options are created equal. Here's a breakdown of the four main categories of economy seating on American Airlines to help you make an informed decision when booking your next trip.

Main Cabin Extra

Main Cabin Extra seats offer increased legroom compared to standard economy seats, with up to 6 inches of additional space. These seats are also located in the front of the economy cabin, providing easier access to toilets and galleys.

Preferred Seats

Preferred Seats are located in desirable areas of the economy cabin, such as near the front of the plane or by the windows. While they do not offer extra legroom, Preferred Seats come with priority boarding, allowing you to settle in and stow your carry-on luggage before others.

Standard Economy Seats

Standard Economy Seats are the most basic type of economy seating on American Airlines. They offer a standard amount of legroom and recline, and are suitable for most travelers. These seats are typically located towards the back of the economy cabin.

Basic Economy Seats

Basic Economy Seats are the most restrictive type of economy seating on American Airlines. They offer limited seat selection and do not allow for any changes or upgrades. Additionally, Basic Economy passengers are not eligible for upgrades, even if they have elite status.
